I have been playing baseball for years, but when I face some serious heat (upper 80s - 90s) I have trouble pulling the ball or hitting with power. Does anyone have any good drills, tips, or ideas for improving bat speed?

Don't worry about "pulling" the ball.  That should come naturally on an inside pitch.  Concentrate on getting your hands going down and "inside the ball" (between you and the ball).  As a matter of fact most professional hitters practice hitting the ball to the opposite field to create positive habits.  Keep your focus on hitting the ball hard and seeing it "deep" or as long as you can and you will find success!!

Hi baller1985,

Here, are few things you can do:

1.  Practice swing things that you can swing faster than your bat.  For example, use a plastic broom and take off the sweeper end and swing it.  You will be able to swing this bat faster.  Practice your swing with this and your regular bat.  The faster swing will have some polymetric effects that translate to your other swing.

2.  Practice at faster speeds in the batting cage or move the pitching machine closer to you.  This will require you to have faster reaction times and help improve your reaction time.

3.  Get stronger while staying flexible.  Start working out but include solid stretching exercises to keep flexiblity.  This will help you have a stronger swing resulting in a faster swing over time.

Good luck,
Jack Elliott

having quick hands is key to having good bat speed.. to gain quicker bat speed, i was told to take numerous amounts of swings every night at home after practice by myself. a good baseball guy i know used to always tell me how pete rose would take hundreds of swings, just whippin that bat through the zone. on certian days of the week depending on how my body felt after my swings from the night b4 would determine how many swings i would then take. usually ill to go from like 200 - 300 swings , but comes with that are blisters bleeding, all the good stuff so i would decrease the number. i really felt just swinging, no ball , no tee nothin. just dry swings really helped increase my bat speed . i hope it helps you to

The best way to gain bat speed is to just relax when you swing.  As far as exercises go that will help: you can attach a towel to at bat, swing in a pool, or use a weighted bat.  I personally think taking a lot of cuts the right way is the way to go.  Work hard and concentrate on relaxing then exploding with your hands.  <ADMIN NOTE - Removed URL> has players that have some really great swings.  There are forums on there that discuss things like bat speed.
