Why buy a wood bat?
Woods bats are generally thought to be secluded to the Major Leagues, but woods bats can be very useful to youths, high schoolers, and college players. Wood bats or wood composite bats are great for batting practice and taking reps in a batting cage. Wood bats are ideal because they are a lot cheaper than aluminum and will save you the wear and tear on your aluminum bats. Batting cage balls are hard on your aluminum bat, they are dense and heavy which will take the life and pop out of your bat. Wood bats don’t loose their pop and will take the punishment of the batting cage balls. Another plus from using wood bats is bat control. They bats are heavier and have a smaller length to weight ratio, which is in a scaled down way like weight training. Once you have been in a cage and practiced with wood, it will be a world of difference when you get on the field and hit your aluminum bat. How do I choose the right bat?
In most cases, bats are measured in inches and weighed in ounces. Typically, a bigger, stronger player will prefer a longer heavier bat, while a smaller player will prefer a shorter lighter bat. Since a player's power is generated through bat speed, it is important that you can swing your bat through the strike zone at maximum speed. Keep in mind that the right bat for you is based on personal preference. Make sure the bat you pick feels good when you swing it.

Fungo Golf
When you get to the ball field early and have some spare time, grab some buddies and play some fungo golf (fungos are best but any bat will do). Pick a spot on the field to hit to and tee off. The person to hit the target in the least amount of strokes wins the hole. Pick different targets all over the field and get in as many holes as possible before the rest of the team shows up.
